About the event

The theme of Gypsies in 19th and 20th-century music is the common thread running through this special evening. Not only will music be heard, but a connecting story will also be told.

A selection of Johannes Brahms's Gypsy Songs, Op. 103, and Antonín Dvořák's Gypsy Melodies, Op. 55, will provide a musical backdrop, complemented by Robert Schumann's Quartet "Gypsy Life" and songs by the Spaniard Joaquín Turina. The program also includes chamber music for violin and piano, such as Maurice Ravel's "Tzigane," and Brahms's Hungarian Dances in an arrangement by Brahms's friend Joseph Joachim, performed by the Russian-Hungarian violinist Count Mourja, a master of this genre. A professor at the Moscow Conservatory and a prizewinner of numerous competitions, including the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition, he will lend a very special touch to the evening.
